Everything you need to know about the work of hydrographers

Hydrographic surveying is a highly varied and specialised role, demanding a deep understanding of the environment underwater. Hydrographers, also known as hydrographic surveyors specialise in acquiring data, positioning and processing in both onshore and offshore marine environments for the safety of navigation.

It is important to know about the nature and shape of the seabed. E.g., plans for new shipping routes should take into consideration areas of sandbanks and shallow water which could be very hazardous and engineers building wind farms should know if the seabed can support new structures.

Understand the role of hydrographers

Hydrographers are also known as hydrographic surveyors as we had already said. They use state-of-the-art technology to produce plans of the seabed, and waterways showing depths, harbours, contours and shapes. Some of the work done by a hydrographic surveying company include collecting information required to draw up different kinds of detailed maps, charts, and plans.

In order to do their work, hydrographic surveyors use sophisticated technology such as satellite positioning systems, computer-aided design packages and echo sounders. The work involves periods on board vessels of survey and more.

Hydrographic surveyors may be involved in the gathering of information for producing charts and critical information related to navigation, prediction of the effects of existing and proposed marine developments, finding out whether channels used for shipping are altered by erosion or silting, exploring sites to extract minerals, dredging projects, planning dock installations, search and recovery and environmental impact assessments.

Qualities of hydrographers

If you want to work in the field of hydrographic surveying or if you want to become a hydrographer, you should have the technical ability in data processing and knowledge of equipment, practical problem-solving skills, patience and ability to maintain concentration, financial and legal expertise and a good head for figures. You might also be required to have a driving license for some positions.
